A note on the architecture of the Baptist Church Centre worship room

Architecturally the worship room represents some of the best baptistic theology of worship expressed in the built environment in the north of England.

The shape is influenced by the baptistic notion of how people gather around the important things of life. This is expressed in the heptagonal design and with the north facing roof light throwing natural daylight into the heart of the worship area.

The baptistery is placed at the entrance to the worship room making the theological statement that baptism marks entry into the gathering believing community.

The wall surface is hand finished brick reminding us that early anabaptistic communities were noted for their craftsmanship in building and pottery.

The architect was Professor Peter F Smith, a Methodist, noted for his concern to create third millennium churches relevant to their setting and purpose.
